Servant heart inspires caring community

Good leaders learn to lead through their experiences. The best leaders are those who learn to lead others by serving them.

Pastor Karthik from Bethany Home in Malaysia is one such leader.

Life events have shaped him. The Hindu temple, where he served as a child with his dad, was near the church his mum attended. Karthik’s mum had seen something different in the way the church cared for people with epilepsy. Their mission became known as Bethany Home, and served the community by providing care for many people with special needs.

Karthik volunteered at the home as a teenager and, after being ordained, returned there seven years ago. For the past three years he has been its director.

At Bethany there is a strong focus on everyone having meaningful tasks. Students can also become part-time teachers and, while they are paid, it’s obvious their biggest delight is being presented with a staff shirt. This small gesture helps give purpose and build a sense of team. Karthik’s goal of ‘helping others who help others’ is on display everywhere.

Bethany Home’s programs aim to integrate students into the community, while a café also allows interaction with locals.

The current theme of the home is ‘Shining Brighter’ and the staff epitomise this. Hearts soften and lives change in more ways than we plan when Jesus is allowed to shine brightly. Even Karthik’s father, who originally was against his son being baptised, became a Christian before he died after years of resistance.

Volunteers are always welcome. Lutheran Women of Australia and Immanuel College at Novar Gardens in South Australia have long-standing partnerships with Bethany Home. Northern Territory’s Good Shepherd Lutheran College has also begun a partnership with Bethany.
