A rich exchange of faith and cultures

Lhatru, Patras, Samuel and Emmanuel…along with many, many others are all people who you have had a profound effect on. You are helping to encourage them in their faith and to build strong foundations for the Lutheran Churches – their leaders and people in our near neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.  Through your generous support of the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) scholarship program you are enabling scholarship recipients to explore and discover answers to the question ‘What does it mean to be Lutheran?’

The scholarship program of the LCA gives men and women from our overseas partner churches the opportunity to study at Australian Lutheran College (ALC) Adelaide, for periods of three months to three years (depending on the type of scholarship).

Short-term scholarships of three months duration enable the recipients to attend lectures at ALC and also visit ministries and congregations of the LCA. In these visits they gain an understanding of the LCA and the way in which we worship and use our gifts to serve the wider communities in which God has placed us.

Longer term scholarships are offered to people to study for their Masters of Theology (18 months to two years) and undertake Doctoral studies (for up to 3 years). In addition short-term scholarships are offered to lecturers from overseas partner church seminaries to take a sabbatical in Australia in order to conduct research and write material and books which will be used in their on-going teaching programs.

The inspiring stories of God at work in the lives of scholarship recipients and in the churches they are from, ensures that the scholarship program is not just a one way street, but a rich exchange of faith and culture. Thorough their presence in Australia, living and learning amongst students and lecturers at ALC and in their visits and fellowship with people in congregations and homes, the overseas scholars share stories and experiences which inspire, encourage faith and point us to Jesus. We need each other. Just as the disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked with Jesus after the resurrection, we journey along the way with our overseas partners, sharing faith and life and pointing each other to Jesus, our LORD and Saviour.
