About Anke and Patrick Sprau

Anke and Patrick are originally from Germany, but moved to Australia ten years ago and now call it home. Both their children Jeremy and Benjamin were born in Mildura, Victoria, where they lived as a family for three years. They moved to the Adelaide Hills in South Australia, where Patrick worked as a General Practitioner and most recently has been working in Indigenous healthcare in Whyalla on a fly-in fly-out basis. Anke worked as a physiotherapist, first in a private practice and more recently in a nursing home. Anke and Patrick also studied online at Tabor College in Adelaide to obtain a graduate certificate in International Health and Development. They attended St Mark’s Lutheran Church in Mt Barker, which is also their sending church, but have been blessed with a network of supporters throughout Australia and in their native Germany.

Anke and Patrick became members of Wycliffe Bible Translators in 2018 and have signed up for service in Papua New Guinea for two years, however, they are open to extending their service period, if all goes well. They are currently based in Ukarumpa, in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Ukarumpa is a centre of operations, where many Bible translators come to check their work, liaise with others for mutual support, participate in professional development, receive medical care or take a break from living in remote areas. For Bible translators to be able to do their work, other professionals and support workers are needed, such as teachers for missionary kids, IT personnel, pilots, and medical personnel like Anke and Patrick. Ukarumpa has a medical clinic where they work in their respective professions, treating expatriates as well as local people from the surrounding villages. Furthermore, they participate in outreach clinics and health patrols to villages that otherwise would not receive medical care.
